Addiction and Mental Health Treatment in Hermitage, Tennessee: A Local Guide

Hermitage sits on the eastern edge of Davidson County, wrapped around the bend of the Cumberland River between Donelson and the Wilson County line. It is a suburb with an unusual position in Nashville’s treatment map: close enough to the city’s hospitals and outpatient programs to reach them on a weekday, far enough out that the drive back after an evening group can run 45 minutes. That geography shapes almost every practical decision a Hermitage resident makes about care.

We at TreatmentTennessee.com built this page for people who live in the 37076 ZIP code and the surrounding neighborhoods — Tulip Grove, Hermitage Hills, Dodson Chapel, Stoners Creek, and the newer subdivisions off Central Pike. The listings above show which programs operate here. What follows is the local context those listings do not carry: what county data actually says, what the commute costs you, and where Hermitage falls short.

37076

The Hermitage ZIP code, home to roughly 38,000 residents. It spills across the Davidson County line into parts of Mt. Juliet and Rural Hill.

234 beds

TriStar Summit Medical Center on Frist Boulevard is the area’s acute-care anchor and the closest emergency department for most of Hermitage.

11.9%

Share of 37076 residents without health insurance, above the national figure of 8.4% and close to the Davidson County rate.

What the county data shows, and what it leaves out

Davidson County has spent four years coming down off a hard peak. The Metro Public Health Department counts suspected fatal overdoses that occur inside the county, and that count reached 725 in 2021. It has fallen every year since. In February 2026 the department reported that 2025 closed with fewer than 500 — more than 400 deaths, but the lowest annual figure since before the pandemic.

2021    725
2023    714
2024    513
2025    400+ (provisional)

Counting only county residents, the same department recorded 609 deaths in 2023 and 513 in 2024 — an age-adjusted rate of 71.4 per 100,000 people. That is still roughly double the national rate, and the drop should not be read as the crisis ending. It reflects a large naloxone distribution effort, a shifting drug supply, and a smaller population of people still alive to be at risk.

The detail that matters most for Hermitage

When Metro Public Health mapped overdose deaths by ZIP code for 2023 and 2024, the five highest-burden ZIPs were 37013 (Antioch), 37207 (North Nashville), 37115 (Madison), 37209, and 37211. Hermitage’s 37076 was not among them. Hermitage carries a real burden, but it is not one of the concentration points — which is exactly why outreach, free naloxone, and mobile harm reduction services tend to land elsewhere first. Residents here often have to go looking for what other neighborhoods receive at their door.

Which substances are involved

Fentanyl is the dominant factor, but a single-substance picture no longer describes what medical examiners find. In 2024, roughly two-thirds of fatal overdoses in Davidson County that involved fentanyl also involved a stimulant. Xylazine, a veterinary sedative that does not respond to naloxone, more than doubled in detections between 2023 and 2024. Late in 2025, the Tennessee Department of Health issued a statewide notice after more than 30 deaths linked to cychlorphine, a synthetic opioid new to the supply.

Substances identified as a cause of death, Davidson County, 2024

Fentanyl    about 70%
Cocaine    44%
Psychostimulants, including methamphetamine    29%
Xylazine    15.7%

Percentages exceed 100 because most deaths involved more than one substance. Source: Metro Public Health Department Overdose Response Program Data Brief, August 2025.

For someone choosing a program, this pattern has a practical consequence. A facility set up mainly for prescription opioid use may not be equipped for someone using illicit fentanyl alongside methamphetamine. Ask directly how a program handles polysubstance use, and whether it prescribes and manages buprenorphine on site or refers out. Alcohol belongs in this conversation too. It appears regularly in Davidson County toxicology findings alongside other substances, and medically supervised withdrawal is not optional for someone with a long alcohol use history.

Getting there: roads, rail, and the evening-group problem

Hermitage runs along three east–west spines: Lebanon Pike (US-70), Old Hickory Boulevard, and Central Pike, all feeding Interstate 40. From the Old Hickory Boulevard interchange, downtown Nashville is about 20 minutes without traffic and closer to 45 with it. Nashville International Airport and the Donelson medical corridor sit just west; Mt. Juliet and Providence sit just east across the county line.

The WeGo Star is a commuter tool, not a treatment tool

Hermitage Station at 4121 Andrew Jackson Parkway has 280 free parking spaces and puts you at Riverfront Station in roughly half an hour. The catch: the train runs weekdays only, in morning and afternoon peaks. It will not bring you home from a 6 p.m. group in Nashville.

Route 6 does the real work

WeGo’s Route 6 Lebanon Pike connects downtown to both Donelson and Hermitage stations and runs late into the night. For anyone without a car, this single bus line is the difference between attending an outpatient program in Nashville and not attending one.

Residential care usually means leaving

Hermitage has outpatient clinics, counseling offices, and a general hospital. It does not have a concentration of licensed residential beds. Most people entering residential treatment travel to Nashville, Wilson County, or farther.

Telehealth closes some of the gap

A virtual intensive outpatient program removes the commute entirely and suits people holding down jobs at the airport, the warehouses along Elm Hill Pike, or the Summit campus. It works less well for people who need supervised medication or a drug-free place to sleep.

Insurance, cost, and who pays in 37076

Hermitage households earn a median of about $74,600 a year — comfortably above the Davidson County figure but not high enough to absorb a $30,000 private residential stay. Roughly 27% of residents here rely on public coverage, and about 12% carry no coverage at all. That combination puts most Hermitage families squarely in the position of needing insurance to work, rather than paying out of pocket.

Share of residents without health insurance

Hermitage (37076)    11.9%
Davidson County, under 65    about 12.7%
United States    8.4%

Bars are scaled against a 15% ceiling. Sources: U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey 2020–2024 five-year estimates; County Health Rankings & Roadmaps, 2025 release.

In practice, four questions decide the cost of care in Hermitage more than anything else: whether the program holds a contract with your plan, whether your plan is a TennCare managed care organization such as BlueCare Tennessee, whether prior authorization is required for the level of care you need, and what the facility charges for anything the plan declines. Commercial plans common in this part of the county include BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, and Cigna. Older residents and people on disability will be working with Medicare, and the military families around the Old Hickory area often use TRICARE. Our TreatmentTennessee.com directory lists which plans each facility reports accepting, but that information changes without notice — call and confirm before you commit to anything.

Weighing Hermitage honestly

Every location involves a trade. Expand the sections below for a plain account of both sides.

What works in favor of treatment here

A real hospital, close by. TriStar Summit is a 234-bed facility on Frist Boulevard with a 24-hour emergency department. For someone in withdrawal or in a psychiatric emergency, the drive is short and the route is familiar.

Distance from the places people associate with use. Several of Nashville’s highest-burden ZIP codes are 20 to 30 minutes away. For someone whose pattern of use is tied to specific streets, bars, or contacts downtown, that separation is protective in a way an inner-city program cannot replicate.

Access to two counties’ worth of programs. From Hermitage you can reach Davidson County providers and Wilson County providers on the same day. That widens the pool considerably when a waitlist closes one door.

Stable housing stock. Hermitage is predominantly owner-occupied single-family housing, and homeownership here runs well above the Davidson County rate of about 53%. People finishing a program are more likely to have somewhere settled to return to, which matters a great deal to whether treatment gains hold.

What works against it

Thin local supply. The concentration of licensed programs sits in Nashville proper, not out here. Specialty services — adolescent care, programs for pregnant women, sign-language-accessible counseling — almost always require travel.

Transit that does not match treatment schedules. The commuter rail is built for a 9-to-5 office worker. Most intensive outpatient groups run in the evening. Without a car, a person is dependent on Route 6 and its headways.

Fewer free harm reduction touchpoints. Because 37076 has not ranked among the county’s top five ZIPs for overdose deaths, naloxone distribution and street outreach concentrate elsewhere. Residents generally have to request supplies rather than encounter them.

Privacy is genuinely harder. Hermitage functions as a small town inside a large city. People run into neighbors at the grocery stores on Old Hickory Boulevard, at the Hermitage branch library, and at school pickup. Some residents deliberately choose a Nashville or Murfreesboro program for that reason alone.

Uninsurance above the national rate. At roughly 12%, a meaningful share of the community will hit a payment wall before a clinical one.

Who this area suits, and who it does not

Hermitage tends to suit working adults with a vehicle and a stable home, who need outpatient care or an evening intensive outpatient program and can drive to Donelson or Nashville a few evenings a week. It suits families supporting a member in recovery, and people managing anxiety, depression, or post-traumatic stress disorder alongside substance use through integrated dual diagnosis care.

Hermitage suits less well people without transportation, people who need residential care starting immediately, adolescents needing specialized programming, people who require a highly confidential setting, and anyone whose home environment is itself unsafe. In those cases, look at Nashville or a program outside the county rather than forcing a local fit.

Before you choose: four checks worth making

Confirm the license. Facilities offering substance use or mental health treatment in Tennessee are licensed by the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services. Ask for the license and the categories it covers, then verify it rather than taking a website’s word.

Check accreditation separately. Licensing is a floor. Accreditation by CARF or The Joint Commission is voluntary and tells you more. The Joint Commission’s Quality Check tool lets you confirm status in under a minute.

Get the money in writing. Ask what your plan covers, what it does not, what happens if authorization stops mid-stay, and what the self-pay rate would be. Verbal quotes have a way of changing.

Compare at least three programs. Call each one. Ask who provides medical oversight, whether medication for opioid use disorder is available on site, what the group size is, and what happens after discharge. A program that will not answer these plainly has told you something useful.

Widen the search beyond Hermitage

Waitlists move. If a Hermitage program cannot take you this month, one of the adjacent areas often can, and several are a shorter drive than people assume.

We publish this material at TreatmentTennessee.com as a directory, not as a provider, and nothing here substitutes for an assessment by a licensed clinician. Compare several programs, verify licensing and accreditation yourself, confirm insurance in writing, and speak to the admissions staff directly before you decide. If something on this page is out of date or wrong, we would rather hear about it than have a Hermitage family act on it.
