Addiction and Mental Health Treatment in Bells, Tennessee: Local Data, Access, and Trade-Offs

Bells is the largest city in Crockett County, home to 2,463 residents, and it sits where U.S. 70A and U.S. 79 run together through town. We at TreatmentTennessee.com wrote this section for people in Bells, Alamo, Gadsden, and the farm roads between them who are weighing treatment for alcohol, opioid, or stimulant use, or for depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions.

None of the providers listed above is located in Bells itself. They operate in Jackson, Brownsville, Union City, and other cities, and some offer telehealth. That shapes every decision below. For a Bells resident, choosing treatment usually means choosing how to get there, how to pay for it, and how much care is enough. Data on this page was reviewed on September 29, 2026.

If it is urgent: If someone is not breathing or cannot be woken, call 911 and give naloxone if you have it. For a mental health crisis, call or text 988. For treatment referrals, call or text the Tennessee REDLINE at 1-800-889-9789. Information specialists answer around the clock.

13,955

Overdose and substance use trends affecting Bells

Tennessee’s overdose picture has improved since 2022, but the numbers remain high. KFF’s compilation of CDC data puts the state’s age-adjusted rate at 35.2 deaths per 100,000 people in 2024, or 2,499 deaths, down from 52.3 in 2023 and 56.0 in 2022.

Source: KFF, using CDC data. Bar lengths are scaled to the 2022 peak.

CDC’s provisional counts show roughly 70,000 U.S. overdose deaths in 2025, about 14% below 2024. In Tennessee, the health department’s 2023 surveillance report says the causes of the recent decline are not fully understood, and 2023 deaths were still 82% higher than in 2019.

The substances involved matter when choosing a program. In that same 2023 report, illicit opioids appeared in 78% of deaths and stimulants in 66%. People often used both, so the categories overlap. About 70% of fatal overdoses happened at home. For a household in Bells, that points to two practical steps: keep naloxone where you live, and ask whether a program treats stimulant use, not only opioid use. Approaches such as contingency management target stimulant use directly.

Local enforcement reporting fits that stimulant picture. A 2023 TBI-led operation that included the Bells, Alamo, and Gadsden police departments reported narcotics charges involving methamphetamine and cocaine. Those were charges, not convictions, and one operation cannot describe an entire county.

New in 2026: In March, the Tennessee Department of Health warned about cychlorphine, a synthetic opioid it describes as 10 times more potent than fentanyl, linked to more than 30 deaths statewide since October 2025. Naloxone works on it but may need repeat doses. TDH says naloxone is available through Regional Prevention Specialists and local health departments, and Safe Spot (800-972-0590) offers live support 24 hours a day during an overdose.

One limit on this data: the county-level picture is thin. TDH suppresses some county rates when fewer than 11 people are involved, and it is rebuilding its overdose dashboard, with a new version expected in fall 2026. We are not publishing a Crockett County overdose rate until a reliable one is available.

Mental health and health-system indicators for Crockett County

The county’s 2024 TDH data package shows small gaps with the state on mental distress and coverage. The larger gap is in local clinical capacity.

Frequent mental distress

18% of Crockett County adults reported 14 or more poor mental health days a month, versus 17% statewide (TDH, 2024 package).

Uninsured rate

12.1% in the county versus 10.1% statewide (TDH, 2024 package).

Primary care physicians

0.29 per 1,000 residents in the county versus 1.25 statewide (U.S. News).

Hospital beds

0.0 per 1,000 residents in the county versus 3.7 statewide (U.S. News).

With no hospital beds counted in the county, emergency, inpatient, and hospital-based withdrawal care generally means driving to a neighboring county. The state also runs Western Mental Health Institute in Bolivar for inpatient psychiatric care.

Language access is a local issue. Data USA estimates that 16.8% of Bells residents are Hispanic. Ask any provider whether Spanish-speaking clinicians or interpreters are available before you book.

Uninsured adults with mental health needs may qualify for the state’s Behavioral Health Safety Net. It covers outpatient services such as assessment, therapy, and medication management, through telehealth or a neighboring county when no local site exists. It is a mental health program, so ask separately about substance use services.

Getting to care from Bells: roads, transit, and distance

Bells sits on the shared U.S. 70A and U.S. 79 corridor, which runs southwest to Brownsville and northeast to Humboldt. State Route 88 connects the city with Alamo, the county seat, and Jackson lies to the southeast. The South Fork of the Forked Deer River passes just south of town.

Costs and insurance coverage

Medicare pays opioid treatment programs a bundled weekly rate, and CMS’s 2026 national amounts give a rough public benchmark for medication-based care.

$277.29

Weekly bundle, methadone

$296.57

Weekly bundle, oral buprenorphine

$220.34

Weekly counseling and testing bundle, no medication

These are Medicare payment rates to programs, not what a patient pays. Your cost depends on your plan, deductible, and the program’s own charges.

Private-pay prices vary far more. Published cost guides commonly quote several thousand to tens of thousands of dollars for a 30-day residential stay, with outpatient programs costing much less per day. Treat those ranges as loose planning figures, since nonprofit and publicly funded programs can price very differently from for-profit ones. Ask each provider for a written estimate that shows what your insurance is expected to cover.

TennCare and many commercial plans cover substance use and mental health treatment, but networks, prior authorization rules, and visit limits differ. Confirm with both your plan and the provider before intake. Our page on rehabs that take insurance is a starting point for comparing options.

Advantages, disadvantages, and trade-offs of treatment from Bells

Advantages

  • Outpatient and intensive outpatient care in Jackson or Brownsville lets you keep your home, job, and family routines.
  • Telehealth can cover therapy and medication follow-up without a drive. See virtual outpatient and virtual IOP options.
  • Jackson, the nearest larger hub, offers more levels of care than a city of 2,463 could support.
  • Family and existing supports stay close.

Disadvantages

  • The county has no hospital beds on federal-based measures, so withdrawal management and residential care mean leaving the county.
  • Choice narrows quickly outside Jackson, and daily programs are hard without a vehicle.
  • Telehealth needs a reliable connection and a private space at home.
  • In a city this size, some people worry about privacy at appointments, or about returning each day to the same setting where use happens.

The core trade-off is intensity versus convenience. Outpatient care preserves daily life but depends on a safe home and a dependable ride. Residential care removes those variables but means leaving Crockett County for weeks or months, and coverage may not stretch that far.

Who the Bells area may suit, and who it may not

May suit

May not suit

  • Anyone at risk of severe alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal, which can be dangerous and calls for medical supervision.
  • People without a car or TennCare transportation who would need frequent in-person visits.
  • People in an unsafe home, or who recently survived an overdose and need a higher level of care.
  • Anyone in a psychiatric or overdose emergency. Call 911 or 988 instead of waiting for an intake.
How to compare and verify providers
  • Check state licensure through the TDMHSAS licensing office.
  • Ask about accreditation, then confirm it with The Joint Commission or CARF.
  • Confirm insurance acceptance with your plan and the provider, including prior authorization and out-of-network rules.
  • Ask which treatments are offered: FDA-approved medications, evidence-based therapies such as CBT, and care for co-occurring mental health conditions.
  • Ask about travel, telehealth, evening hours, and Spanish-language services.
  • Compare at least three providers, call each directly, and cross-check against FindTreatment.gov.

Listings on TreatmentTennessee.com are reviewed by hand (see our listing process), but no directory can confirm current openings, licensure status, or coverage for you. Disclosure: TreatmentTennessee.com is owned and operated by Apex Recovery, which also appears among the providers on this site. Weigh it like any other listing.

Bottom line for Bells residents

Bells is a workable base for outpatient and virtual treatment and a harder one for residential or hospital-level care. We at TreatmentTennessee.com suggest comparing at least three providers, confirming licensure, accreditation, and insurance directly, and calling before you drive. If your situation feels urgent, use the numbers at the top of this section rather than waiting on an intake.
